CEO Briefing September 2017
A big WELCOME BACK to all of our children, families, staff, governors and partners. I’m so proud to start this new school year by sharing some amazing success stories for our pupils and our Trust.
There has been a lot of media interest in the changes to GCSE grades this year and the impact this has had on outcomes. With this impact not always being positive, it’s brilliant that we broke our record for GCSE success at Abbey School in 2016/17 with some of our young people getting the equivalent of Grade Ds in English and Maths! At Pennine View, 3 out of 4 pupils were awarded grade 2 for English language, and all our pupils who participated passed the spoken language endorsement.
However, we saw even more success for our year 10 pupils as 26 young people across Abbey, Hilltop, Kelford took the GCSE PE short course. with one of our pupils getting a grade A and four more pupils got grade Cs! To quote Chris Kamara: “unbelievable”!
It really does underline the “special” in our schools when our pupils have managed to achieve so much. Obviously it’s not suitable for all of our children and young people to sit GCSEs and we see huge achievements made in a variety of exceptional ways with all our children, but this record breaking year is something that I’m sure you all share my pride in!
I took this excitement and enthusiasm to our great capital on 5th September 2017 when I and a delegation of Nexus leaders and governors attended the National Governance Association (NGA) “Outstanding Governance” Awards at the Palace of Westminster. It was wonderful to hear the nomination details for all the finalist, as this really underlines how amazing school governors are and how hard they work up and down our county to support our state education system. However, it was our privilege to be the ONLY representative from the entirety of Yorkshire, Humber and the East Midlands. To be crowned winners for Outstanding Governance: Vision and Strategy 2017 is unbelievable.
What an exciting first week back: what a fantastic year we’re going to have!
